Dog Blog, Top Ten Royal Corgi Facts!

The Queen and her Corgis.

The Queen and her Corgis top ten Royal Facts about the corgi breed.

Big It Up For Maj it's Saturday 16th June Maj's Official Birthday!!!! Happy Birthday Maj!

1 The Corgi breed was introduced to the Royal Family in 1933 by The Queen’s father, King George VI, when he bought a Corgi called Dookie from a local kennels. There are two types of Corgi, The Pembroke and the Cardigan. The word corgi is from Cor, Welsh for dwarf (although some suspect it may have been originally "cur" for working) and gi is for dog. Despite this, the dog doesn't speak a lick of Welsh. You'll have to learn that on your own
2 The Queen has owned more than 30 corgis during her reign, starting with Susan who was a present for her 18th birthday in 1944. A good proportion of these have been direct descendants from Susan. The Queen currently has three corgis, Monty, Holly and Willow. Border Collies are famous for the eye, a non-stop stare that can stop a sheep in its tracks. The Golden Retriever is renowned for the eye shift, an eye movement that steers humans to the tennis ball. The Corgi specialises in mind mining, which is the ability to stare at a human and extract key information out of their minds. Corgis use this skill to gather information about anything to do with food.

3 The Queen also introduced a new breed of dog known as the ‘Dorgi’ when one of the Queen's corgis was mated with a dachshund named Pipkin which belonged to Princess Margaret. The Queen currently has three Dorgis, Cider, Candy and Vulcan. If Corgis were:
Cars, A Cardi would be a Volvo, A Pem would be sporty Corvette.
Birds, A Cardi would be an eagle, ever watchful and wise, A Pem would be a finch, flitting from place to place.
Musical Instruments, A Cardi would be a mellow sax, A Pem would be a sassy trumpet.
Famous Musicians, A Cardi would be Kenny Rogers, A Pem would be Madonna.
Talk Show Hosts, A Cardi would be Merv Griffin, A Pem would be Jerry Springer.

4 As well as corgis and dorgis, the Queen also breeds and trains labradors and cocker spaniels at Sandringham. There is a special Sandringham strain of black labrador founded in 1911. Corgis sit with legs sprawled out behind them. Pet owners find this quirk, one of the most distinct aspects of the breed. They will often be found in the Flying Squirrel position begging for nuts.

5 When she’s at Buckingham Palace, the Queen likes to be in her suite by 5pm to be served a spread of scones, sandwiches and cakes with the corgis often tucking into the crumbs. Recent research substantiates that Corgis are able to hear a crumb hit the floor from at least two rooms away.

6 The corgis have been known to take a nip at footmen and sentries and also one of the Queen’s ladies-in-waiting, Fortune FitzRoy, the Duchess of Grafton. ‘They’re heelers,’ the Queen once explained. ‘They’re cattle dogs so they bite,’ adding with a sly smile, ‘they chase people.’ Corgis love stuffed animals toys which they rip and disembowel in record time. Corgi owners must either replace them frequently or re-stuff and stitch. That’s where Prince Charles gets his make do and mend tendencies!

7 Every morning, she starts the day with a cup of tea. At 7.30am the ‘morning tray’ is brought into her bedroom laden with a silver teapot, a water jug and milk as well as a plate of biscuits for her dogs. While other dogs are learning to ignore food distractions during training, the Corgi is able to pick up treats without breaking stride. This practical skill earns them the title of Hoover Dog.

8 The Queen’s long solitary walks with the corgis help her release tension when she feels frustration or anguish, sometimes pulling up the odd weed while out in the fields near Balmoral her estate in Scotland. The Corgi is bred to herd, so pet owners may find their dog corralling other animals in the house. They are very good at herding stray spouses, unruly little people and assorted grandparents.

9 In the afternoon she takes them out in Buckingham Palace gardens before serving them their dinner. A chef prepares the ingredients that include dog food as well as cooked rabbit, chicken, steak or pheasant, which she ladles into individual bows with a silver spoon and fork, mixing in gravy and crumbled biscuits. The Corgis' relationship with food is greatly overstated. It’s blatantly untrue that they will eat until they explode. They actually have a built-in monitor which allows them to stop one bite short of bursting point.

10 She carries good luck charms from her children in her bag, including miniature corgi dogs and horses and family photos. Top secret files have revealed that also in her bag are a packet of Shmackos , three pigs ears , some poop pick up bag and a bottle of Kennel Nos 5. The Corgi’s favourite meal is a well known secret but I will tell it to you now, it’s anything on your plate.

Happy Diamond Jubilee Everybody!

PS. I have just received word from Buck House , that Maj and Monty , Holly and Willow would like to thank her supporters that have made this the most popular post to date. Her Maj further informed us that she would like her dear pop pickers to keep her at number one in her jubilee year. Can we do that folks?
On her behalf we thank you all, Maj and Co!
