Flog It Blog It, Somerset Shell-Shocked!

Jessica the hen lays mammoth egg!

Jessica the hens' mammoth egg has set a record for Somerset!

My sources at Molly Media report very eggciting news from Somerset here in good old Blighty. For Jessica the free-range hen it must have been an eggs-crutiating time when she laid an egg three times bigger than normal. The egg weighed a hefty 6ozs, which is a staggering a quarter of a pound heavier than the average 2oz egg. The egg was laid on the opening day of the Olympics and it sure was a golden cracker! Bet that brought tears to her eyes as it was probably eggstreamly painful! Did no vet eggzamine her after she gave birth to this eggstraordinary egg? We bet that Jessica was egghausted. Steve Egginton (his real name) told our hard boiled reporters that he used the egg to make scrambled egg on toast for breakfast. 'It was very tasty and a rather substantial meal for us both,' he told our eggstatic correspondent. Despite the monster weight of the egg it is not quite heavy enough to break the Guinness World Record. The largest hen egg, currently stands at a staggering 1lb. Must have given the poor chicken hen-aroids laying that! OUCH! Bet it made a good omelette though. Don’t egg me on, I’m sure I could hatch a few more but for now that’s all yolks!

  3. How eggactly would a hen lay an egg that size? Mum sends total sympathy to the hen and reckons she should be eggcused from any more egg laying. No worries, and love, Stella and Rory

  7. Molly this is a very timely post....mom was just reading an article in the August 'Southern Living' magazine. It stated hen houses are coming into vogue in the city. The hen houses pictured in the article were quite fancy too. And lo and behold some of the fancy hens actually lay colored eggs. That would be quite handy at Easter.

  13. A 6 oz. egg, and all he does is scramble it?! Geeze, I would have at least expected an omelette, or hard boiled. Maybe he pierced the shell and blew the egg out, so he could save it?

  20. I am trying to think of a way to tell you how funny your "egg" story was whilst using the word "egg". I am not as creative as you! A hysterical story... but the poor hen...

Have you ever seen an ostrich egg? Now, that's a huge egg! I ate one once.
