The Coxheath annual Custard Pie throwing Contest.

The annual Coxheath Custard Pie throwing contest!

It’s time for the world custard pie championships in the village of Coxheath, in Kent. The practice of flanning or the throwing of custard pies has a venerable history, with film stars Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin at the forefront of the art. Nearly a century later, 16 teams of four battled it out, dressed in colourful costumes. Many having travelled from around the world to take part in this event.  Amongst those taking part were teams called 'Pie always me', 'Splats be having you' and 'One too many Sherberts'. However no custard was injured in the hosting of this event, rather the pies are made from a mixture of flour and water. Organisers say they had ordered 700lbs of flour for the day. The first world custard pie championship took place in June 1967 and was a male only event. It was created by former Mayor of Maidstone, Mike FitzGerald. Contest heats lasted just 15 to 30 seconds with local team 'Pie of the Tiger' scoring a victory against 'Tutu Fruity' in the final round. What a mess, we are truly dis-custard. So on your marks, get ready, get set, throw! I am ready and waiting for the next time the evil cat Maudikae aka Hideous Beast comes into My Garden! Who would you like to throw a custard pie at?

With Halloween coming up we have opened the Spooky Gallery (last tab on the right). To join just pop over to Mollie & Alfie  leave a comment asking to be Spookified and they will showcase the Phantom Booth each day. We will then post them on our Spooky Gallery (last tab on the right) which will be updated daily with the newest entries first. Let’s get in the mood for Halloween pups and kits! Who is in the gallery today?

  43. Thank you for stopping by my blog and leaving such lovely well wishes. We have posted some photos of the Walk to End Cancer so please stop by again.

We were greatly relieved that honest-yo-dog REAL custard was not going to waste being just casually tossed about! That is best saved for eating. But watching humans splat each other sounds like messy good fun!
