A reliable class indicator is the type and breed of your pet according to Kate Fox in her latest book ‘Watching The English’. People in the upper echelons prefer Labradors, golden retrievers, King Charles spaniels and springer spaniels. The lower classes, meanwhile, are more likely to have Alsatians, poodles, Afghans, chihuahuas, bull terriers and, of course, Rottweilers.
Cats are less popular than dogs with posh
people, although those who live in grand country houses find them useful for ratting
and keeping mice numbers down. The lower classes by contrast keep mice as pets
as well as guinea pigs, hamsters and goldfish.
Some middlers and lower middlers take
great pride in keeping expensive exotic fish such as Koi carp in their garden
pond. The upper classes think this is tasteless.
Horses are widely regarded as posh and
social-climbers often take up riding or buy ponies for their children in order
to ingratiate themselves with the ‘horsey’ set. However hard they try they
don’t fool the genuinely ‘posh’ horse owners.
Generally, only the middlers and below
go in for dog shows, cat shows and obedience tests. The upper classes regard
showing dogs and cats as rather naff but showing horses and ponies is quite
acceptable.
Middlers and below are more likely to
dress up their dogs and cats in coloured collars and bows. Upper class dogs
usually just wear plain brown leather collars.
So which one are you?
Love this! I would imagine pet pigs are on the lowest of low scales ;-)
ReplyDeletePawsome picture of you! Gee, I wonder which category a pet rock would fall into -- lower, middle or upper. (I guess a diamond is a sorta kind of rock -- must be an Upper Class pet.)
ReplyDeleteOh Molly, you made me laugh when I saw your POSH self... adorable..... I am now trying to figure out what class i fit in since i have never had anything but Mutts... with at least 10 to 50 breeds mixed in....
ReplyDeleteteeehee...Miz Molly, you are one classy broad, a real dame...teehehehe....in pink rollers or a diamond tiara, you RULE!
ReplyDeleteoh oh - we guess we have NO class at all as we don't fit in any of those categories :) :) :)
ReplyDeleteCats are less posh than dogs! Duh!!! BOL!!! Great pic!!
ReplyDeleteOh pish on the posh ~ and go fetch my hoss ~ giggle
ReplyDeleteI would suspect it also is a money issue. Dogs and larger animals tend to cost more than cats and smaller animals to keep.
ReplyDeleteOh this is great my friend! I love the diva picture - awesome!! Have a great weekend! XOXO - Bacon

ReplyDeleteHmm, we're not impressed that cats are less posh than dogs. Being more refined--after all, we don't eat poop--we'd have thought we'd be FAR more posh!
ReplyDeleteWEll I finks we are so low our belly is dragging the ground...heheheheeh

What about Scotties? What class are we in?
ReplyDeleteWags,
Ranger
Oh too funny! You get the award for making Mum squirt coffee out of her nose when she saw that picture of you!! . . . She's still laughing. I think we must be sort of middle class? Since we live in a 'grand country house' I suppose I'd better keep those mice out, huh?
ReplyDeletesimple country folk who loves animals of all kinds - i don't dress 'em up, show 'em, breed 'em but i spoil 'em all rotten. :)
ReplyDeleteMolly, why do you not state that you are the POSH-est of them all! For dog's sake, it sounds like those snooty upper classers have no real regard for taste!
ReplyDeleteHappy Friday,
Oz
You are the fanciest pup, you are lookin' good Molly!
ReplyDeleteAnd we think only crazy folk want siberian huskies. Like our mom.

Hi Y'all!
ReplyDeleteLet me see now...Chessies aren't mentioned, so I guess we are "no class"...but what do I care!
Thanks for visitin'!
Y'all hurry back now,
Hawk aka BrownDog
Ha, we obviously are one of the lower classes, except we knew this already as we are not pretentious, contemptuous snobs who think we own the world and everyone in it, pfftttt.
ReplyDeleteDip and Elliot x
We are in favor of breaking rules...BOL
ReplyDeleteSmileys!
Dory, Jakey, Arty & Bilbo
Well that's a tough question...I love my agility trials, so that makes me a middler. However, I pretty much grew up on horseback. But, horrors of horrors, I truly preferred a Western saddle, so that makes me way low in the eyes of the horsey set! I had hamsters growing up as well......I guess the question isn't so hard after all. LOL!
ReplyDeleteWe refuse to answer on the grounds that it might incriminate us. Have a great weekend. XO, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giuiletta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo p.s That's quite a get-up you have on Molly.
ReplyDeleteAs usual, we're the fringe element......although Roxy is half Bull Terrier. Otherwise, we don't fit anywhere.
ReplyDeleteXXXOOO Bella & Roxy
When we lived in Germany it was looked down upon to have a "mutt" or mixed breed dog and hardly anyone spays or neuters their dogs. It was weird. I think your side of the pond is more that way, here is the US, most could care less what kind of pet you have.
ReplyDeleteWe're unique, we're Doods, dudes, and a dudette!
ReplyDeleteYour Pals,

Posh Spice is British and she has a bulldog. You can look it up!
ReplyDeleteMolly - you look like a diva in your pic today - you have the patience of a saint to let your human dress you up like that:) We aren't sure where our humans fit in that description, but we do know how happy we are they like to have pups like us:)
ReplyDeleteWoos - Phantom, Ciara, and Lightning
Me and the chi's are low-class all the way, and are just fine with that! bol
ReplyDeleteI love that picture of you.
I'm a mix between an upper and lower class since Beamer is a labrador/shepherd mix. I can live with that :)

I had a lot of trouble identifying where we stand in all this..... but we are confused..... all the dog show people we have ever seen or met seem VERY hoity toity to us!!
ReplyDeleteTail Wuggles, Rubie xxx
LOL! Love the curlers!!!! Must say I never realized I was upper class. :) I did read that the Golden Retriever's golden temperament is due to them being developed as Gentlemen's Hunting Dogs, and the Gentlemen not wanting to break up dog fights.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what being owned by a Scottie says?
ReplyDeleteIf you looked up NOT POSH in the dictionary, you would find a picture of my Human.
ReplyDeleteAnd me.
This Chihuahua has pet mice - our humans are English but obviously not posh!
ReplyDeleteYou look like a '50s house wife Miss Molly! And by the way we are not posh thank Bast!
ReplyDeleteField trials over here are a money sport. I know you have something similar there, but I guess it is more for middlers. :)
ReplyDeleteAs a spangle gundog type, I'm heading towards the higher echelons of class. But then the Hooman keeps buying me pretty collars. Hmmm....
