Share It Sunday, Owned By A Husky!

Nominated by last week's guest blogger Wag N Woofs.

The Sibe-Vibe, Wet Husky!

We are almost at the end of our fun #atozchallenge. It has been a fun month of April having to come up with a different word for each letter of the alphabet! Today is letter "W"
"W" is for Wet husky!

Husky fun fact of the week :

Bathing a husky is MESSY!
Not really an unknown fact, i'm sure. But it works PAWfectly with this post!

Also, bathing your husky helps speed up the blowout process. . . .

I decided to give my huskies a bath the other day.

Our outdoor water is not in working condition, so I had to resort to using the tub.
This was not an easy task!
I'm not sure how many of you out there have dogs with a double coat of thick thick fur, but for people who do, i'm sure you can understand!

My huskies are going through a blowout right now, so I thought . . . time for a bath, and it should make a great post for my blog also.

Koda was first. This is the first time I have bathed him. Since we have only had him a few months now. ( For those of you who don't know, huskies do not need to be bathed as often as other dogs)

I'm not sure he had ever seen a tub before. He did pretty good considering.
At first he was pretty scared. He wasn't sure what was going on. After the fist few minutes he started to relax and enjoy the water. Although I have to say, he looked HILARIOUS all wet!

He was so tiny and his tail looked like it should belong to a cat!

As you can see from the look in his eyes. He was not to happy to meet Mr. Blow dryer!

Next up was Mika . . .

Mika HATES the bathtub! She is terrified of it! She cries for the whole duration of the bath!
Our bathroom is upstairs and she refused to walk up there, she knew!
After some coaxing, I got her up, at this point she refused to get into the tub!
She did everything she could to hang onto the side of the tub as I tried my best to lift her in.
It was actually quite comical. BUT I got her in!

To the left, we have a sepia version of Mika, refusing to get into the bathtub!
Of course I color popped her collar to look pretty in pink!

To the right, you will see an original photo of Mika . . . refusing to get in the bath tub! This is when she really started to whine!

Poor girl. I eventually had to literally lift her up into the tub, which she then cried very loudly every second for the whole duration of her bath.

Last but not least, it was time for Lexus to have her bath.

Lexus was definitely the easiest out of all three huskies.
She is the smallest which helps a lot, and she literally decided to lay down on the job! I was scratching the shampoo into her fur and it felt so good she started to lean into me, and eventually just fell down, and decided to stay down for the rest of her bath.

I was able to get more photo's of Lexus in her bath because she did not try to jump out every two seconds like the other two huskies!

As you can see in the photo, she did not mind at all.
Her undercoat really shows through when her fur is wet. She has a bunch of black on her outer, more coarse coat, but underneath, she has this soft fuzzy cream colored fur.

She always poses so beautifully for the camera too! Love the color pop of her original colored eyes on a sepia edit.

My daughter decided to give Lexus a Mohawk while I was soaping her up! (left)

She didn't mind :)

Lexus has always had a skinnier tail then most other huskies. So I love when it is bath time and I take the blow dryer to her fur. Her tail finally looked like a proper husky plume!! haha!

1) ALWAYS brush your dog before you give them a bath! Why? Dogs with a double coat especially, will lose a lot of their fur while they are being bathed. It is best to get all the loose fur off ahead of time, so your tub is at least a "little" less hairy!

2) It is important to know your dogs, and know if they have sensitive skin or allergies of any kind. If your dog has either , then you should talk with your vet about the safest shampoo for you.

3) Wet your dog from head to toe. Being careful not to get water into their ears or eyes. With a husky you will need to massage the water into the fur, as their coats are built to keep them dry.

4) Again, when administering the shampoo, take care not to get it into your dogs eyes or ears.

5) Do not forget important places on your dogs body, such as their belly, tail and armpits. Those areas tend to collect dirt the most.

6) Be sure you rinse the soap out until no suds are left. If shampoo is left in their fur it can irritate the skin

7) Towel dry and/or use a blow dryer, but if you use the blow dryer, make sure it is on a low, cool setting.

8) Finally, once their coat is all dry, brush out all the access fur, and you are left with a fluffy, puffy, husky!

Quick reminder before you go, if you would like to order your "husky mom" t-shirts in time for mothers day, get your orders in by April 27th. For photo's of the shirts, see my page HERE, and for more info go to www.rockindahuskies.com.

  1. So, given Gail's yearning for a husky type dog ("my next dog is a Malamute") I am always thrilled to bits to read posts pointing out the complications of owning, or bring owned by, this breed.
Thank you so much for this great post!
    Toodle pip!
Bertie (who is actually quite good about his infrequent baths, these days).

  3. what a story, what a photo story... we bathe our two in the back yard with the hose. during cold months we have a walk in shower and i get in the shower and use a hose to bath them. Jake loves his, baby has to be lead into the shower with the leash... also outside Baby has to be lead to the hose with a leash. she hates water just like yours.

  8. Ha ha ha! That's why I'm a cat person!! But when I DID have a dog, I made bath time fun by giving her a treat before the bath, and one after. Plus I sang little songs to her and made it as pleasant as possible (including tug of war with the towel afterwards)...she always loved bath time and all I had to do was say "Let's go take a bath" and she'd go get in the tub and wait while I got the shampoo and stuff. BEST DOG EVER!

  9. Oh those wonderful eyes! Mom agrees, it's not easy with a Husky in a bathtub. Once one escaped and ran through the whole house while the shampoo flew around like a snow storm. Have a super sunday Molly, hope without a bath

  19. Of course you know we love Jenna and her huskies, since we nominated them! Jenna always gives great advice and tips, especially for husky families, but often for all dog families. I thought she was very ambitious to bathe all three dogs in one day....we usually do ours one, or maybe two in one day at the most! :)

  21. Huskies are messy? Not an unknown fact? Well, I never knew that. Guess it's 'cause I'm not a husky, huh? Bet they look all spiffy after their baths, though.

  22. We are lucky enough not to be able to have baths at home - too much for the Momster. So we go to the groomer. She always tells Mom we are so very well-behaved when we are there - have to keep the Momster guessing:)
