Fog It Blog It, Black Dog!

Mollys' Spooky Graveyard Picture for Halloween

Halloween Tales From Spooky London Amen Court.

As Shocktober continues getting us nearer to Halloween we thought today we’d bring you yet another story from bizarre spooky London. So heading off to Amen Court, Westminster we will tell you the pawsome tail of the Black Dog of Newgate. This spirit is said to haunt Amen Court near St Paul’s, where a wall from Newgate Prison remains. The wall was part of Deadmans’ Walk down which condemned prisoners once walked when going to the gallows. The Black Dog is said to have been witnessed as a sinister shadow gliding up and down the streets and crawling along the top of the wall immediately before an execution was due to take place. A moment of shear terrier? I bet I would flea without a paws! This is accompanied by a hideous smell and the sound of dragging footsteps. One prisoner called Luke Hutton wrote about the existence of the Black Dog. He believed it to be the ghost of a former prisoner called Schoiler, who had been eaten by the other starving prisoners. I bet that ticked him off and a whole new leash of life for him then! The prisoners imagine that they had seen Schoiler, a sorcerer, at night in the form of a black dog. He would walk restlessly round the prison, his jaws open in preparation for his revenge. Dis temper of his needs to be cur tailed we say. The dog haunts the passage to this day, slithering and crawling all the way to Amen Court where it disappears. Such a scary melon-collie story!
