Slog It Blog It, Spooky Diets!

Molly The Wally gets dressed for Halloween.

Horror movies can help you lose weight.

Did you know that watching a horror film can help you lose weight? According to research out this week one movie could burn off the equivalent of a whole bar of chocolate. Just sitting through a 90 minute of nail biting, adrenalin pumping terror can burn off the same calories as going for a half hour walk. The top movie for fat busting is The Shining which can burn you off a whole 184 calories. Next come Jaws with an amazing 161 and then The Exorcist with 154 calories. The research was carried out by The University of Westminster who measured the amount of energy expended whilst watching a selection of frightening movies. Scientists recorded the heart rate, oxygen intake and carbon dioxide output of the subjects and discovered the number of calories used increased by on average a third during such films. The more the subject jumped in terror the more the heart rate soared. So here are the top ten films on those who want to go on a Spooky diet.

1. The Shining: 184 calories
2. Jaws: 161 calories
3. The Exorcist: 158 calories
4. Alien: 152 calories
5. Saw: 133 calories
6. A Nightmare on Elm Street: 118 calories
7. Paranormal Activity: 111 calories
8. The Blair Witch Project: 105 calories
9. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: 107 calories
10. Rec 101 calories.

So go on and have a fright night you will have earned your popcorn!

  36. Molly that's amazing - I can sit and munch a chocolate bar and simply match my calories intake with a suitably calorie counted scary film - no damage to the figure? that's so clever. Do you think having nightmares uses more calories too? cos after that I would be bound to have big nightmares....

  41. You chose some very scary movies, Molly! Mom remembers going to the theater and seeing Jaws for the first time. Jaws came out of the water and the lady sitting right in front of mom threw her purse in the Aire and it came down and landed right in our mom's lap! haha She didn't even know that she had thrown it!

    Love ya lots,
    Mitch and Molly

  47. This is great information Molly. We watched Resident Evil with our Mama last night and it was plenty scary for us. We also discovered that watching zombies chomp on humans has a way of killing the appetite for snacks. That is a good thing ,,,, we think.
