Dog House Blog, Mad Men, Bad Men!

Molly The Wally , Says No Your Place Ladies!

Politically incorrect advertising from the fifties and sixties. When Mad Men were Bad men!

After our Dove ad on Saturday (here) we thought we'd take a look at when ads were bad. We are going to step back in time and have a look at some ads from the fifties and sixties when women were depicted as brainless kitchen slaves who needed all the help they could get when it comes to looking good. So step back in time with me and let’s visit The Mad Men era when politically correct advertising hadn’t yet been invented. Those were the days, women know your place!

Stay slim and happy with Life Savers' Pep-O-Mint! No, no eat cookies we have a solution for you below!

One sure way to get your man angry. Don't buy Ivory Liquid with free bracelet! Hmm maybe Mean Marvin should confiscate it and give it to her for Christmas!

Instant coffee? Brew fresh or you'll get a slap on the butt! By the way glad that is all hubby has to worry about? Actually she's looking for that bracelet!

Ivory Liquid again this time promising hands that look like your sons' girlfriends' despite years of washing dishes. Talk about keeping it in the family? By the way I am a real bitch so I'm his date! On second thought, no you have him!

Chubbettes, how happy can a chubby girl get? Very happy when I brake that record over their heads! Told you just carry on eating the cookies chubby girl!

Head Shoulders tells us don't be a loser use our shampoo! No keep the dandruff and lose the backseat driver love we say!

Clairol's 1975 ad for its' instant shampoo warns us against feeling ugly and becoming depressed with greasy hair. That's OK when you run out, hop over to McDonalds' and grab a nice greasy bag!

With Jell-o ladies you can't fail to deliver great puddings to your hard working hubby without even stressing out that one brain cell or breaking a nail. Fabulous!

Now we have the grown up chubbette!  Look life is cool you can now carry on eating cookies.

And lastly the Dixie Kitchen Cups. Probably with this you'd be married to Mean Marvin who stole your free bracelet and refuses to buy you a dishwasher! It of course a known scientific fact that washing up ages the face. My my those were the days!

Women know your place!

  8. It's funny - what seemed normal back then in not normal now...and we are sure in 20 years what is normal now will be considered the same way as politically incorrect.

I'm not sure things have changed that much, having just washed up a sink full of dishes and wishing I had invested in Dixie cups and plates. :-)

  51. Oh my goodness... I can't decide which one I hate the most! I think the Jell-O one makes me the maddest! Egad - thank heaven those days are gone (although... now they just try to tell us we are nothing if we aren't young, thin, and blindingly-white-toothed!).

  54. Those are funny but a little sad too. Our mama remembers the Ivory soap hands ad. We suspect the gal on the bike sprinkled something on her shoulders to look like dandruff so that guy would get lost.
Do you suppose these ads helped push along the feminist revolution?
