It is the 23rd year of the lg Nobel Awards which
celebrates the weirdest and funniest experiments in the fields of science. The winners come from all over the world and
Nobel laureates handed out the prizes during a ceremony at Harvard University, sponsored by science magazine Annals of Improbable Research. For the first time, the winners received cash
prizes $10 trillion, but in Zimbabwe dollars, which means they'll receive
around four U.S. dollars each. The inventor of the trillion dollar note, Gideon
Gono, won the Ig Nobel Award in 2008.
Psychology: An
experiment that found people who think they are drunk also think they are
attractive.
Joint prize in
biology and astronomy: An experiment that showed lost dung beetles can use the
Milky Way to find their way home.
Medicine: A study
assessing the effect of listening to opera on heart transplant patients who are
mice.
Safety
engineering: An electro-mechanical system to trap an airplane hijacker by
dropping him or her through a trap door, sealing him or her into a package and
then dropping the packaged hijacker (with a parachute) to the ground where
police will be waiting.
Physics: The
discovery that some people would be physically capable of running across the
surface of a pond - if both they and the pond were on the moon.
Chemistry: The
discovery that the biochemical process by which onions make people cry is even
more complicated than scientists previously realised.
Archaeology: Two
researchers who parboiled a dead shrew, then swallowed it without chewing so
they could examine their excrement to see which bones would dissolve in the human
digestive system and which would not.
Peace: Belarus
and its president, for making it illegal to applaud in public, and to the
Belarus State Police, for arresting a one-armed man for applauding.
Probability: Researchers
who discovered that the longer a cow has been lying down, the more likely that
cow will soon stand up, but that once a cow stands up, you cannot easily
predict how soon that cow will lie down again.
Have a fabulous
freaky Friday all.
How funny. Definitely a fun convestational subject too.

My poetry writing comes only as I put work into it on the weekend. I'm still trying to figure out my writing life!!!! Anita
Mwahahahahahaaaaaargh!! You had me from "Annals of Improbable Research" :))))) Have a great weekend xx
ReplyDeleteLOL thanks for the laugh!
ReplyDeleteThat one about the cows! Ha ha ha! And it's really useful to know I could probably run across a pond on the moon, except I'd much rather run through it!
ReplyDeletethat Archaeology-thingy rocks! I swallowed a lot of things (without chewing, of course) and I never won that nobel prize. Have a great friday, maybe you can swallow a squirrel and we could examine what kind of nuts are gastro-resistant?

ReplyDeleteParboiled shrew for dinner anyone ?
it is amazing what they will spend money on researching
ReplyDeleteHa, we love to read these. Too funny. Looking good in those glasses, Molly!
ReplyDeleteMath: The science of numbers that have no purpose.
ReplyDeleteI was terrible at math, I never gave a rats ass about x+y+q=lmnop. It has no purpose. But I can always figure out anything I need to know, it has a purpose, therefore it isn't math!
Those are so funny Molly, especial the cow one!
ReplyDeleteOK...it's probably inappropriate to laugh but...arresting a one-armed man for clapping?!? BOL!!!! Have a great weekend, Molly!

ReplyDeleteMolly, are these real? lol... I like the Psychology and Probability ones!
ReplyDeleteWow! Those are some heavy findings! Yikes!
ReplyDeleteOnce again you have me laughing my tail off Molly...Reminds me of the Darwin Awards...Have a Fab Friday!
ReplyDeleteOh I think that research on the cow is wrong the longer a cow has been lying down, the more likely that cow will be DEAD!

ReplyDeleteHow random! Lol
ReplyDeleteSorry we haven't been around much, Have a great weekend!
Slobbers
How interesting . . . maybe we can win one with an amazing and yet weird discovery . . . we'll be thinking . . .
ReplyDeleteYour Pals,
Murphy & Stanley
Say what??
ReplyDeleteThe probability of how the cow positions itself is.... very useful in everyday life.
ReplyDeleteOur kitty brains are boggled at the weirdness of these winners. But the boiled shrew does sound somewhat tasty.
ReplyDeletePurrs,
Cindi Lou & The Kitty Krew
LOL! I was going with the Shrew just out of bizarreness, until I hit the Cow one. Good grief!
ReplyDeleteLOL @ "Psychology: An experiment that found people who think they are drunk also think they are attractive." I thought of myself when reading that.
