A Blast From The Past On Technosorus Thursday!

Do you remember the days when a computer took up whole rooms, programming in Fortran or the like? How about monitors that took up a whole desk or boot up programs on floppy disc? Arrghhh those were the days of the blinking green cursor, the whirling of the mechanics and the clattering of the printer. Do we miss them? Noooo! Watch this cute video where the Fine Bros show kids just what it was like to use old computers. It is a real blast from the past. Heddy days!

Do you remember those days? Have a tremendous Technosorus Thursday all.

  3. I remember seeing my FIRST EVER COMPUTER. On a school trip to the engineering department at Trent Polytechnic in 1976. It took up a whole room. And yes, we got to write a programme in basic (to do the sum 1+1=2, I think) and transfer it to cards to feed into the machine. And mine did not work because I had misplaced a comma...
    Cheers, Gail.

  8. BRILLIANT. Now I can see that these savvy kids ALSO feel helpless like the way I do when I try to learn their world! We are on a continuum, aren't we Miz Molly!!!!!! That was fun - the little man in the hat just melted my heart.

  9. Those 5 1/4 disks were such a pain in the neck. However, the word floppy disk is a great way to determine age. Those who look at you with a blank stare are definitly post digital age.

  10. Made me giggle! I don't care if the Iphone 25 is out by the time I have kids (IF I DECIDE TO!!!), they will start off with a Nokia Brick and they will know the struggle!! Hahaha

    Take care,

  16. Oh that's too cute! But it all has to start somewhere, doesn't it? I hope those kids have some appreciation for the computers they have now...they're so easy to operate!

  20. Even Joey dog wasn't around back then! We do have some old techno-dinosaurs moldering in the crawl space. We stay away from them just in case they're dangerous. Our computer science human who works for Pictometry found one of Mom's old cell phones from the early 90s and brought it to work for everybody to laugh at! hahaha!

  21. I definitely remember! I was in the work force before people even used PCs. Most people used a dumb terminal that connected into a main frame computer that needed a warehouse sized building to keep it! COBOL and FORTRAN were the languages. I also remember when my company at the time started using the first gen PCs and how everyone griped about the learning curve!

  25. Wow that's amazing. We already had forgotten what it was like back then. But funny how all the kids couldn't finde the mouse. The other day I told my grandchildren that I have an old typewriter. They could understand how to use it because where is the mouse and how do you delete things. The technology had taken a giantic step.

  32. that was superb!!!!! That computer reminded me of the old VDT's I used at the newspaper. Do you believe they didn't replace their VDT's until the LATE 1990s????? Unreal! We were using an obsolete system when they were bought for us when we transitioned from typewriters!

  33. SHE remembers when those first came out and SHE borrowed one from an Education Resource Library to have in the classroom (first one in the school) The kids loved 'Lemonade Stand', and couldn't wait for their turns on the computer.

A few years ago, SHE walked by kids at a school camp who were fascinated by the phone. SHE could hear 'this is mad'. Put my number in next....."Miss, this phone is Mad!" Took awhile before SHE realised it was a dial phone. Entertained the kids for ages.

    Thanks for the video.

  34. Yes I do! Technology has came SUCH a long way it's crazy! And it is even more crazy to think where it is going. Soon, there will be no computer screens in front of us. Just a picture sort of floating there, and we will be swiping and typing right in the picture. How cool!

  39. Our mama remembers computers like that one where you had to type commands to do anything. The first computer she ever had was a Mac SE, one of those little one piece machines with a tiny screen. No internet back then. Yes, she is older than dirt. She is also a total geek.

We asked her what that was and she showed us (she still has hers). "WTD" we said...where's the monitor and mouse...we were just like those kids in the video *BOL*
