Dog House Blog, Squirrel Mayhem!

Molly The Wally & That Squirrel!

Squirrel rescued from pond by not one but three fire engines!

This we dedicate to Parsley whose old man is a brave fire fighter and to all the fire fighters out there!

Call the fur brigade, it’s operation 'Squirrel Nutkin'! How many firefighters does it take to rescue a squirrel? Not one, not two but three. Yes three fire engines made an emergency dash to save a squirrel stranded on a small island in a pond. Nuts I hear you say but this was a genuine operation involving three fire engines, two ladders, and one very soggy tree rat. It took at least six highly trained firefighters to recover the grey squirrel when it became stranded on a tiny island of reeds in the middle of the town center pond in Watford, Hertfordshire. Most interesting thing to happen in Watford town center all year no doubt! The fire crews laid a ladder between the pavement and the island in an attempt to persuade the squirrel to crawl its way back to safety. The rodent ended up in the water again, but it managed to swim to the ladder and climb up the rungs to reach dry land, bedraggled but apparently none the worse for its’ ordeal. The pesky little blighter then proceeded to run off without even saying thank you. Fire brigades spent at least £3.5million in three years rescuing animals, including a snail, seven dolphins, a lost duckling, a chimp in a chimney, an iguana on a roof and a kitten with its head stuck in a bongo drum. Rescuing the Watford squirrel is actually not that unusual then but a snail, beggars belief?

As for the snail we had to find out what it was about. Hold on to your seats. It wasn’t the sort of emergency that required the fastest response nor was it something moving at the speed of fire. The target a snail and the caller an elderly woman distressed by the mollusk presence 8ft up a wall in her hallway. A crew duly swooped, carefully removed the snail from the wall and showed it to the door. They then turned their expert services to comforting the distressed householder. You could not make it up!

  5. These rescuers should write a book about all the things they do besides fight fires. I wonder how much of their training is for this kind of stuff? Too funny!

  9. That is one pretty amazing story, Molly. And to think that just yesterday Mom couldn't get animal control to come here where there was an injured possum just outside our fence. Poor little guy drove us nuts for hours but he could barely hobble. Animal control said they have to let nature do its thing. POor fella finally made his way up the hill and down a storm drain.

  34. What a fuss for a squirrel don't know why they didn't just bring all his friends and keep them marooned together. They have devious minds Molly - I saw a Naturewatch tv programme in the UK which is following these little rodents around peoples gardens to see what they get up to - these squirrels were given jars of fruit, nuts without shells or nuts with shells - they chose all the nuts with shells so they could bury them in 84 (yes, 84) different locations to return in the Spring - I spied on our tree rats recently burying acorns in my lawn - will have to bring Scrappy the borrowed dog over to dig em up and bury them elsewhere to confuse the little devils. We have snow here Molly - Scrappy's family went tobogonning at the park but left him home as they think it's too cold for him - bet he was miffed - not to worry, I am taking him on my very own woodland snowy adventure soon to make up for it. 35. I don't know why there was such a fuss over a tree rat... Seriously. They are evil, evil, evil things.. Probably trying to take over the world, a tree at a time.
