Dog House Blog On Thieving Thursday!

Molly The Wally Tells You A Story!

Over in South Africa the street battle for domination of the hood has turned nasty. Yes man and baboon, are playing dirty by using guerrilla tactics. For the baboons it means swarming SAS style up the sheer sides of blocks of flats, opening windows and plundering anything inside. Usually they just want food, but sometimes a flapping set of net curtains or a childs' cuddly toy bear can provide some added entertainment. For the humans, the weapons of choice tend to be paintball guns and pepper sprays. They have the momentary effect of driving the baboons away, but hunger and sheer nerve always bring them back. These are the scenes which regularly affect life in Cape Town, South Africa, where man and baboon share a sometimes uncomfortable existence. Protected on the Cape Peninsula since 1999, there are now around 500 baboons living in 16 groups, increasingly cut off from their old, native habitats by the sprawling city. Whilst some don't give a monkey about their neighbours, other go ape as they steal anything they can get their grubby little mitts on. They are literally driving the residents bananas.

  1. it is funny and scary at the same time - baboons can be really viscous and their teeth are even more nasty than ours!

  2. Definitely a case of keeping windows well and truly shut. Glad we don't have to cope with them here.

  3. Really, dear Molly, I'm so happy we have only squirrels in our garden, even if the take the birds food away, it is much better than to find a baboon sitting on your couch!

  10. Oh it's so sad
what people do to animals ...
    Habitats are destroyed.
Where should they go for the animals?
Where will they find in their habitat, food when there is no longer this habitat.
    Sad greetings from Sylvia

  12. Oh dear. There are troops of monkeys where Grandpa and Grandma live. The doors and windows have to be shut or they'll enter the house and grab whatever they can find, they even open fridges! They would open vitamin bottles and eat them then throw up everywhere. Oh, the mess they would leave if you were not careful in keeping your doors and windows shut. Mommy's bedroom was flooded once during heavy rain because the monkeys had thrown a plastic bag which got stuck in the gutter and the water overflowed into Mommy's room...it's very sad because the forest where they live are being stripped down to make way for development.

  14. WOW! never thought of that wildlife issue before! It's not a good thing when the animals have hands just like humans and are quite a bit stronger! Not to mention those big baboon fangs!

  26. Oh my God, that is my worst nightmare come true. I have been terrified of monkeys since I was a little child - don't ask me why because they are beautiful creatures and so intelligent. I would have to move from there, LOL.
